Unfortunately I was unable to attend the talk and didn't get any one on one time with Paul Gravett, luckily the talk was videoed so it wasn't a total loss.
I found the talk very interesting, it was really about the evolution of comics and the sort of birth of graphic novels, Paul had some strong opinions on animations, some that I share, for example Paul believes that animation isn't usually as powerful as a graphic novel, that they cant hold as much detail, I dont disagree with this, he talked a lot about Fredric Wertham and his book seduction of the innocence and everything that followed on from that like the comics code authority, which I had prior knowledge about, but once Paul began talking about Alan Moore and how he lays out certain book it made me start thinking about my story and what the best way to lay it out may be visually, i do like the 9 panel structure but I would also love to do some certain long panels that take over the page, also Paul mentioned how Alan loves to use political commentary in his stories for example League of extraordinary gentle men being set in a world where thatchers government remained which i found interesting, maybe i should bring some sort of commentary in to my story, I love the idea that the movement in a graphic novel is visualised in a viewers heard and I loved this talk, i hope to get talking to Paul and get his advice on my book soon.
